The Ameren Requirement
Why Your Dock Builder Must Be Ameren CDB Certified
Ameren Missouri operates the Lake of the Ozarks under a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license. Any new dock, dock modification, slip addition, or refoaming requires an Ameren permit before work can begin. Repair work on existing decking, cables, or hardware usually does not.
Permits are only granted to property owners working with an Ameren-Certified Dock Builder (CDB). The CDB program enforces structural standards, environmental compliance, and shoreline rules across the 1,150 miles of Lake shoreline. Roughly 150 builders hold active CDB status.
National foundation and repair consolidators do not hold CDB certifications. Only verified CDBs can legally submit permit applications and perform new dock work at the Lake. If a contractor cannot show you their CDB number, they cannot complete the job. Confirm certification before signing anything.
Browse the Ameren CDB directory or read our deeper CDB certification explainer. You can also see Ameren's official program page at ameren.com/missouri.

Year-Round
Built for the Lake's Year-Round Demands
Permit applications spike March through May as owners plan for active season. Ameren processes more than 3,000 shoreline permits a year, so timing your application early matters. If you want construction wrapped by the 4th of July fireworks, get on the calendar in February.
Summer storms and the heavy boat traffic of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout create sudden repair demand from June through August. Foam billet wear, cable replacement, and storm damage rebuilds dominate the back half of summer. Off-season (September through February) is the best time for major rebuilds or modifications. Less congestion on the water, faster permits, and builders with open calendars.
Winter ice damage is a real risk on the upper Gravois Arm and shallower coves. The builders we work with handle ice-damage assessment and emergency stabilization through the cold months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from Lake of the Ozarks property owners. If your question isn't here, call us at (573) 369-9037 or send a message.
Do I need an Ameren permit to build or modify my dock?
Yes. Any new dock, dock modification, slip addition, or re-foaming requires an Ameren permit. The permit application must be submitted by an Ameren-Certified Dock Builder. We connect you with a CDB to handle the permit alongside your build.
How long does a new dock build take?
From quote to completion, typical timelines are 8 to 16 weeks. The Ameren permit step alone runs 30 to 90 days depending on time of year and dock complexity. Active build time is usually 2 to 4 weeks.
What does a new boat dock cost at the Lake?
Most new builds fall in the $36,500 to $89,500 range for a 2-well concrete dock. Premium 50x50 concrete builds reach $129,000. 1-well aluminum starts around $22,000. Site conditions, cove access, and design drive the variance.
Are boat docks covered by my homeowners insurance?
Standard Missouri homeowners policies typically do not cover boat docks. Most lakefront owners need a separate dock and watercraft structure rider or a standalone watercraft policy. The builders we work with can point you to local agents familiar with the Lake.
What's the difference between an Ameren-certified builder and any other contractor?
Ameren-Certified Dock Builders (CDBs) are listed on Ameren Missouri's official CDB roster. They've met Ameren's structural, environmental, and operational standards. Only CDBs can submit Ameren permit applications. Non-certified contractors cannot legally perform new dock work, modifications, or re-foaming at the Lake.
Do you serve my cove?
We coordinate work across all four arms of the Lake: Gravois, Niangua, Big Niangua, and Glaize, plus the Main Channel. From mile 0 at Bagnell Dam to the headwaters, the builders we work with have shoreline experience across the entire 1,150 miles.
